Hey, I have had a somewhat similar experience to you, but am at one year from my surgery by now and I feel your pain. In my case, instead of a full detachment, a membrane started growing and pulling my retina, distorting it. So one day everything was fine, the other I noticed I was seeing code fine with one eye and code distorted with the other eye, and it progressively worsened from peripheral vision to macula (center).
It took way longer for the doctors to feel a surgery was needed / beneficial, but I am glad I did it. The gas-in-the-eye period is one of the most bizarre experiences I have ever had and I am sure you can probably agree.
Vision does improve with time though, but it is not a linear process. I have done mine in June 2023 and started noticing my vision getting better in January 2024 and then significantly better by late February.
It is still not the same as it was before it all began though, unfortunately.
And in case you find yourself "too young for all that", I had this being just 29 years old :x
