GANs are typically superior deep generative models as compared to VAEs. Although VAEs are bound to work in a latent space, they are easier and faster to train. VAEs can be considered as semi-supervised learners because they are trained at minimizing a loss reproducing a certain image. A GAN, on the other hand, are solving an unsupervised learning problem.
