You are not alone here. There is an important distinction between maximum computing power and the average computing need. For instance, a 3ghertz CPU with 16 cores is theoretically 16 times faster than a single core CPU with the same clock speed. However, we rarely use all 16 cores to their full capacity. For most lightweight tasks, both CPUs are quite alike. Therefore, computers are indeed getting faster, but we don't necessarily feel that in our day to day tasks.
If you are into high performance computing, however, like training neural networks or doing ray tracing, the difference from one CPU/GPU to another is clearly evident. However, this is far from what most people do.
